On 14th April 2024, students from the MSc in Environmental Health and Safety Program embarked on an educational field trip to the Lau Fau Shan Oyster Farm. Situated in Lau Fau Shan, Hong Kong, the purpose of this excursion was to provide students with valuable insights into local aquaculture practices and the specific challenges faced by oyster farmers. By engaging directly with the farmers, students had the opportunity to learn about various aspects of oyster cultivation, including techniques employed, environmental considerations, and the life cycle of oysters. In-depth discussions centered around the difficulties arising from environmental changes, water quality concerns, and market demands. Leveraging their knowledge in marine resources, students explored potential strategies to improve oyster harvests and promote sustainability in the industry. This visit not only expanded students' understanding of the oyster farming sector but also fostered connections and potential collaborations with local stakeholders, fostering a commitment to sustainable development in oyster farming.
