In order to understand more about the recycling and treatment processes of waste electrical and electronic equipment in Hong Kong, a group of students had a visit in WEEE Park on 20 September 2023. WEEE Park consists of 5 zones, including Exhibition Corridor, Unloading Bay, Buffer Storage, Processing Hall and Dashboard Area. It has adopted advanced technologies and equipment for treating waste electrical and electronic equipment and turning the waste into reusable materials such as plastics and metals through a series of detoxification, dismantling and recycling processes. With detailed explanation by the WEEE Park staff, students were able to witness the operations of the facility and understand the importance of turning waste into resources. To help EHS students explore Hong Kong and get to know each other, a cultural tour to Stanley & the Peak was organized on 30 August 2023. Students first went to the Peak. They enjoyed the spectacular panoramic view of everything from Sheung Wan to Tsim Sha Tsui, as well as Victoria Harbour. Students also took the new generation Peak Tram to truly experience the beauty of Hong Kong’s natural wonders. After having a seafood meal in Causeway Bay, students had a walk in Stanley. Through visiting the iconic Murray House - one of the oldest Western-style buildings in Hong Kong and the Stanley Market, students took this opportunity to take eye-catching photos and understand more about the history of Hong Kong. To let students know more about the program curriculum, course enrolment, ENVS 6111 research project course and our faculty staff, an Orientation Seminar was held on 28 August 2023. Students also joined a welcome lunch after the Orientation Seminar. It was a very good chance to meet their classmates and faculty members prior to the beginning of classes, and all students enjoyed the Orientation Day a lot. Read more

Greetings from MSc Environmental Health and Safety Program Office! The Program Office has organized a series of orientation activities to help students to prepare for their new adventure at HKUST. A coffee latte art workshop was held on 11 August 2023 evening, as most of the non-local students were still scheduling their journey to Hong Kong, this event was organized for local full-time and part-time students only. Through the ice breaking session and the coffee workshop, students were able to meet their new classmates before the semester starts and get to know each other. Read more

On 30 May 2023, a farewell dinner party was organized for 2022/23 MSc EHS students. The farewell dinner party was held at Hon Wo Korean Restaurant. Around 30 staff, guests and students participated this joyful and memorable meal. Dr. Veronica LEUNG, the Associate Program Director of MSc EHS Program, wished all students a bright future. Read more

  Date: 23/03/2023 – 30/03/2023, 04/05/2023 To equip students with the most current food industry knowledge, PAS 96:2017 Food Defence (TACCP) Guidance Training Course was organized in the spring semester. It introduces the application of food defence methodologies to assess and manage generic and specific threats for the development of a food defence plan. Upon completion of this course, students were able to Recognize different types of threat assessment methodologies that may be used to identify threats to an organization, operation and product Describe the process of TACCP food defence (PAS 96:2017) Students found the courses informative and gained more real-life insights through references to current examples provided by the lecturer and group activities. Students who successfully completed the course with 100% attendance were issued a certificate by BSI HK Limited.   Read more

To equip students with better industry knowledge, a visit to Koon Chun Factory was organized for ENVS 5115 students on 22 April 2023. Koon Chun only uses Canadian non-genetically-modified soy beans for soy sauce and condiments, without adding any preservative, flavor enhancer or chemicals to assist fermentation. They are all prepared in natural way which preserve the unique favor of natural sauce. Through the introduction given up the owner of Koon Chun Factory together with the site visit of the sauce factory, students were able to know more about the procedures of soy sauces production and the food safety concepts behind.   Our MSc in Environmental Health and Safety program has been selected by UGC to award eligible students the fellowships in the 2023/24 academic year.
In recognition of HKUST’s efforts in contributing to the strategic development of Hong Kong, the University Grants Committee (UGC) has awarded HKUST some Fellowship places for the 2023/24 academic year. The scheme encourages students to pursue inter-disciplinary and in-depth postgraduate training in priority areas that are beneficial to society.
  Eligibility Applications are open to local students admitted to the designated TPg programs in 2023/24; The award of the fellowships will be based on merits taking into account the students' academic achievements, professional qualifications, relevant working experience and achievements in other areas as well as the proposals submitted by the students; and To avoid double subsidy, applications from students who are receiving other forms of government scholarship (except student financial assistance) for pursuing the same program will not be considered.   Fellowship Amount The fellowship students are required to pay a minimum tuition fee of HK$42,100, and the differences will be subsidised by the fellowships subject to a cap of HK$120,000, regardless of the actual study period of the TPg program.   Application For interested applicants, please submit the program application online before the application deadline, AND send an email to ocesmsc@ust.hk with your personal statement. In order to have better understanding of safety testing technology development in Hong Kong, a visit to Vitargent was organized for MSc EHS students on 31 March 2023. Established in 2010, Vitargent uses medaka and zebrafish embryos to perform toxicity tests. Vitargent makes use of glow-in-the-dark medaka embryos test for “Estrogenic Endocrine Disruping Chemicals”, while zebrafish embryos will be used for testing acute toxicity. Students were able to know about the background, technologies and applications of Vitargent through a talk and a guided walk in the laboratory. They also gained a deeper understanding about the career path in the field of safety testing technology. Read more

Group interview is a common and popular way to assess communication and critical thinking skills of potential candidates. A group of EHS students joined this practicum, and they conducted discussion exercises in a group of 3 for each session. Students were required to answer a number of questions which are frequently asked in an interview. Constructive feedback will be provided by our instructor, Miss Grace Siu. It was a valuable opportunity for our students to learn from each other's presentations, and the instant feedback from Grace. Through this career workshop, students were able to learn how to excel in a group interview and stand out from the crowd. Read more
