A group of MSc EHS students visited Hoi Ha Wan on 25 October 2019. Hoi Ha Wan is one of the six marine parks in Hong Kong. It was designated in July 1996. It covers an area of about 260 hectares. Coral communities in Hoi Ha Wan is famous in terms of species diversity and richness. Mangroves and rocky shores with various kinds of marine organisms can also be found in Hoi Ha Wan. Students had a survey in rocky shore to observe organisms that live in the upper layer of intertidal zone, such as snails and clams. They also had a coral-observation trip aboard a glass-bottom boat which allows them to gain deeper understanding of coral communities and different types of coral species in Hong Kong. With the vivid and detailed explanation by the WWF volunteer, students found the trip impressive and educational. Read more

In Hong Kong, chemical wastes are generated from different trades and activities. To better understand the treatment of chemical waste in Hong Kong, a visit to Chemical Waste Treatment Center was organized on 9 Oct 2019. Through video display and exhibition hall with various displays, students gained a deeper understanding about chemical waste treatment and the safe operation of Chemcial Waste Treatment Center. In order to learn more about the concept of 'Converting waste to energy', a group of students had a visit in T Park on 2 Oct 2019. 'T' represents 'Transformation'. T Park signifies the continuous drive to shape Hong Kong's 'waste-to-energy'ambitions for the good of the community. It also reflects a vision to encourage positive change in people's attitudes and behaviours towards waste management and resource reocovery and recycling. T Park is more than just a plant, but a place to learn and engage in Hong Kong's green force through its recreational and educational facilities.   (Source: https://www.tpark.hk/en/) Read more

A group of students visited The Hong Kong Observatory on 20 September 2019. The guided tour took our students backward in time to trace the development of the Observatory in the past 130 years. Students were amazed by the way of how weather forecasts are made and how technology is put to use. Through listening the talk, visiting elegant historical buildings and appreciating the history of the Observatory, students found the trip enjoyable and educational. Read more

In order to learn more about the sewage treatment process in Hong Kong, a visit to Shatin Sewage Treatment Works was organized on 18 September 2019. Shatin Sewage Treatment Works is the largest secondary sewage treatment works in Hong Kong. Through the introductory tour at sewage treatment information centre with display panels and plant model, students were able to gain more knowledge of different sewage treatment methods and sustainable development of Hong Kong. On 27 May 2019, a farewell lunch party was held after the ENVS 6111B project presentation, and students were invited to sit-in the presentation. The farewell lunch party was held at The Chef's Table. Over 30 staff, guests and students participated this joyful and memorable dinner. Prof. Wen-Xiong Wang (ENVS MSc Academic Director), Dr. Cindy Lam and Dr. Jinping Cheng wished all students a bright future. Read more

A poster presentation for ENVS 5115 students was held on 8 May 2019 evening. This course provides up-to-date technology, and industrial practices on food safety control. Several international food standards and food safety management systems (e.g. ISO 22000, HACCP), as well as changes in food safety legislation which coupled with a number of high profile food safety issues will be discussed. Though the poster presentation, students were able to identify, investigate and critically evaluate a current issue in food safety by applying selected theory and research techniques. Read more

Employer representatives from HK Bio members gave short talks introducing their companies as well as dicussed expected skills set and requirements of students from the perspective of employers.
