To help students explore public health, conquest and prevention of infectious diseases, a group of EHS students had a field trip to Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences on 4 November 2023. The Museum Building was opened in 1906 as the Government Bacteriological Institute, built for the control of disease and its prevention. It is located in the historically densely populated, old Chinese residential district of Taipingshan where plague broke out in 1894. Students visited several exhibitions in the Museum through a guided tour, such as The Old Laboratory, SARS corner, and Production of vaccine against smallpox. They were able to understand more about how people overcame the challenges of infectious diseases and epidemics; public health improvements through vaccine production; the development of Western and Traditional Chinese medicine; their interaction with each other and with society at large; and significant medical advances of local and international importance. Group interview is a common and popular way to assess communication and critical thinking skills of potential candidates. A group of EHS students joined this practicum, and they conducted discussion exercises in a group of 4 for each session. Students were required to answer a number of questions which are frequently asked in an interview. Constructive feedback will be provided by our instructor, Miss Grace Siu. It was a valuable opportunity for our students to learn from each other's presentations, and the instant feedback from Grace. Through this career workshop, students were able to learn how to excel in a group interview and stand out from the crowd. Read more

A group of MSc EHS students went to visit the Eco Expo Asia 2023 - International Trade Fair on Environmental Protection on 28 October 2023. The Eco Expo Asia 2023, with the theme "Taking the Leap towards Carbon Neutrality", is a leading trade platform for the eco industry that showcases the latest green products, equipment and technology. Through a guided walk in the Exhibition Centre and participating in ESG Career Talk, students were able to enhancing their environmental knowledge and understand more about the latest development of the green industry in Hong Kong and all around the world. To secure an interview opportunity, building a professional CV and cover letter is crucial. A Career Workshop - CV Critique was co-organized with HKUST Career Center. A group of MSc EHS students participated in the CV Workshop. Senior Learning & Development Trainer - Miss Grace Siu, guided our students to construct an effective CV and cover letter to make sure their application is not lost in the shuffle. "While recruiters averagely spend only seconds looking over a candidate’s profile, you need to catch their attention at first sight. Learning how to employ bullet points in a CV can quickly and easily show an employer that you're an ideal fit for the job." Grace also provided feedback to students on each of their CV. Students’ responses were overwhelming, and all of them found the workshop very useful. Read more

To equip students with better industry knowledge, a visit to Koon Chun Factory was organized for ENVS 5115 students on 14 October 2023. Koon Chun only uses Canadian non-genetically-modified soy beans for soy sauce and condiments, without adding any preservative, flavor enhancer or chemicals to assist fermentation. They are all prepared in natural way which preserve the unique favor of natural sauce. Through the introduction given up the owner of Koon Chun Factory together with the site visit of the sauce factory, students were able to know more about the procedures of soy sauces production and the food safety concepts behind. In order to understand more about the yard waste recycling work in Hong Kong, a group of MSc EHS students visited Y Park on 4 October 2023. Y Park is located in Tsang Tsui, Tuen Mun and adjacent to West New Territories (WENT) Landfill. The aim of established this yard waste recycling centre is to promote recycling of yard waste into useful materials, reducing disposal at landfills and relevant carbon emission, realizing “zero landfill” and facilitating carbon neutrality in the long run. Y Park is equipped with various installations for the yard waste recycling treatment process, such as wood shredders, wood cutting machine, drying and sterilization unit, etc. These installations can transform suitable yard waste into various useful materials such as wood boards, wood beams, wood chips and sawdust. With detailed explanation by the Y Park staff, students were able to explore the forms and applications of local recycled trees, wood processing methods and upcycled wooden products made by local wood artists. To learn more about the concept of ‘Converting waste to energy’, a group of students had a visit in T Park on 20 September 2023. ‘T’ represents ‘Transformation’. T Park is a state-of-the-art sludge treatment facility specifically design to provide an innovative and eco-friendly solution for the problem of sewage sludge disposal in Hong Kong. The facility integrates a power station, a spa resort and a sludge treatment facility. It utilizes fluidized bed incineration technology, capable of burning 2000 tonnes of sludge every day and uses the excess heat energy to generate electricity. At full operation capacity, an excess of 2 MW of power is available daily. T Park signifies the continuous drive to shape Hong Kong’s ‘waste-to-energy’ ambitions for the good of the community. In order to understand more about the recycling and treatment processes of waste electrical and electronic equipment in Hong Kong, a group of students had a visit in WEEE Park on 20 September 2023. WEEE Park consists of 5 zones, including Exhibition Corridor, Unloading Bay, Buffer Storage, Processing Hall and Dashboard Area. It has adopted advanced technologies and equipment for treating waste electrical and electronic equipment and turning the waste into reusable materials such as plastics and metals through a series of detoxification, dismantling and recycling processes. To help EHS students explore Hong Kong and get to know each other, a cultural tour to Stanley & the Peak was organized on 30 August 2023. Students first went to the Peak. They enjoyed the spectacular panoramic view of everything from Sheung Wan to Tsim Sha Tsui, as well as Victoria Harbour. Students also took the new generation Peak Tram to truly experience the beauty of Hong Kong’s natural wonders. After having a seafood meal in Causeway Bay, students had a walk in Stanley. Through visiting the iconic Murray House - one of the oldest Western-style buildings in Hong Kong and the Stanley Market, students took this opportunity to take eye-catching photos and understand more about the history of Hong Kong. To let students know more about the program curriculum, course enrolment, ENVS 6111 research project course and our faculty staff, an Orientation Seminar was held on 28 August 2023. Students also joined a welcome lunch after the Orientation Seminar. It was a very good chance to meet their classmates and faculty members prior to the beginning of classes, and all students enjoyed the Orientation Day a lot. Read more
